Introducing Handmade Wedding Accessories Perfect for Vegas + a Giveaway!

Rockabilly Day of the Dead Vegas Wedding | J Hunt Photography

Do you remember this incredible Day of the Dead wedding? The one full of totally amazing handmade items reflecting rockabilly Vegas wedding style? Well many of those items – the boutonnieres, the hair flowers, the bouquets – were made by Little Asian Sweatshop.

I asked Fenny, the designer, shop owner and maid of honor at the featured wedding a few questions about her geek chic designs. I know many of you are always looking for a little bit of Sin City style to include in your wedding day accessories and fashion, and Little Asian Sweatshop designs are just that: quirky and cool with just the right little touch of Vegas! She also does styles for men, including bow ties and boutonnieres.

Fenny doesn’t just do Vegas, though. Her designs also incorporate hugely popular fandoms like Doctor Who, comic book characters like Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, even Magic the Gathering and Harry Potter. They’re a perfect add on for your wedding day (or everyday) attire as a hint to your favorite TV show, video game or other wonderfully nerdy passion.

Since today is Black Friday I thought we’d get our own hype going and Little Asian Sweatshop has teamed up to host a giveaway for readers of the blog, so be sure to enter to win a one of a kind playing card hair accessory below!

But, onto the Q&A!

Little Vegas Wedding – Hi Fenny, thanks so much for taking the time to let us get to know you and about your designs! What would you categorize your design style as?

Little Asian SweatshopI like to think of my design style as “nerd meets rockabilly”. I’ve always been drawn the rockabilly aesthetic (seriously ladies, I have yet to find a body-type that doesn’t look totally adorable and sexy in rockabilly style!), but I am a *huge* nerd at heart.  I think the juxtaposition classic and feminine with geeky and boyish makes for a fun and exciting look.

Like chocolate covered bacon (with less calories!)  :D

LVW – When and why did you start designing wedding accessories?

LASI started designing wedding accessories when my best friend Paige got engaged! I wanted to come up with something fun and new for her wedding.  At first, I tried to make a dress out of playing cards but I just couldn’t get it to work.

As I was sitting in my work-room, wondering where I went wrong, I noticed that all the cards scattered on my floor looked like a blanket of petals…and after a couple days of experimenting, I texted a picture to Paige my first prototype for the Playing Card hair flower, and I could practically hear her squealing via text!

Together, we made those Playing Card flowers as party favors and for her wedding bouquet.  As I was pulling these looks together, it brought back how much I loved making wedding bouquets and corsages (my family owns a florist, where I worked from high school through college).  It sounds corny, but there’s something so magical about knowing that you’re making something for a couple’s most important day together.

LVW – Do you do special orders? What are some of the items you’ve done by request?

LAS – Yes!  I *love* special orders!  It’s what challenges me and makes what I do so fun!  My craziest order was to make centerpieces from my playing card flowers for a casino-themed party.  The party planner’s original plans fell through, so last minute, she contacted me to come up with a whole concept for 300 guests – and have it delivered … within a month.  I was exhausted by the end of it, but it was also such a rush to pull together something so much in such a short amount of time!

My favorite (besides Paigey’s wedding of course) was making the wedding bouquet for a friend’s wedding. She didn’t know what she wanted, but she knew she wanted to incorporate New York City, comic books, novels, and Doctor Who (all the things they love) into a bouquet.

It was so much fun to come up with different ideas, and play with colors, shapes and textures with all these elements to create a cohesive and beautiful look that also reflected her personal style.  These are my favorite types of projects; when I get to stretch creatively while helping a bride figure out what is her vision for her wedding. I love sending them progress photos and then hearing back “I wasn’t sure what I wanted…until I saw your photos!”

LVW – Are your products made by hand?

LAS– Yes! I make everything by hand! It’s the only way I can ensure that each petal, feather and rhinestone is placed exactly where I need it to be – and that it won’t fall apart at the first gust of wind. At the risk of sounding like a hipster, I try to buy handmade as much as possible, since that gives me a greater sense of confidence for the quality.

LVW – Will you be appearing at any crafting shows this fall and winter?

LAS – Nothing in the next few months.  My last show for the year is usually Baltimore Comic Con or Mobtown Greasers Ball in September.  I need October through November to prep for the holiday rush and to get cracking on creating new products and playing with new ideas.

Starting in January, I’ll be at a couple local roller derby bouts (Charm City Roller Girls and the DC Roller Girls), before kicking off the spring and summer road shows.  If anyone would like to see me at a show near you, please contact me! I’m always looking for new shows to vend (plus I just love traveling and this is such a great excuse to visit new places!)

Thank you so much Fenny! I love her designs and the idea of incorporating fandom and pop culture into a wedding!
