LVW Mailbag: Advice on loft-style venues + custom catering

LVW Mailbag

Despite running this site (something I do as a hobby from Canada) I do NOT consider myself a Las Vegas wedding expert. However, I tend to get many questions from readers seeking advice, and try my best to answer or at least point them in the right direction to get the answers they need. At the very least, I give my opinion or things I’ve heard from couple who have submitted their weddings to the site.

While I can no longer keep up with the volume of questions I get by providing personalized answers, I will be choosing some to run some of these question and my answers in a series called LVW Monday Mailbag!

We kick off today with a question that plagues many couples marrying in Vegas: locked in catering and venue photography rules!

Hi Kelly,

Your site seems to be filled with the best information on Las Vegas weddings, so I thought I’d come to you for advice! Our wedding will be a destination wedding for all our guests and we are thinking Vegas will be the best spot, as it is middle ground for everyone.

I am struggling to find a venue I actually like. I am turned off by the typical “Vegas hotel wedding.” It is important to hire our own photographer and would much rather have our own caterers rather than a venue’s set/generic menu.

We’d love for our wedding to be outside near greenery, something a bit rustic. Or I’d also love a loft, or intimate warehouse feel with brick and lights! Any suggestions?! We’ll have about 70 guests, and a venue near Summerlin and Red Rock hotel or another great hotel would be great to make it easier for our guests to get around.

Thank you,
K

Dear K,

Ah, the great venue search. You actually have some pretty specific requests, so the first thing I would do would be to narrow down the search to places that allow outside caterers. That limits things quite a bit and will help stop you from going crazy.

Some choices that would be top of my list would be:

Springs Preserve
Although they require the use of an exclusive caterer at this time, from what I’ve seen they offer a lot of flexibility in terms of menu. Also, the array of venue options at the Springs may fit what you need, including a combination loft-like/garden space. Keep in mind while they do not restrict photographers, they do require you to have an event planner.

Historic Fifth Street School
This venue meets many of your requirements, in that they allow you to choose your own caterer and photographer, but it is very much a self-service venue and you may wish to hire a wedding planner as well. But the space is rustic, outdoors and near all some great downtown hotels your guests will find convenient. String some bistro lights up over the courtyard and it will have that airy lofty feel. It is not near Red Rock or Summerlin, but sometimes compromise is the word of the day when it comes to wedding planning!

That being said, I do encourage you to explore places with a locked-in caterer. I think you’ll find the quality of the food and beverage available in Las Vegas is modern, gourmet and very flexible compared to what you may be used to at home, especially at some of the higher-end country clubs like Red Rock Country Club or Canyon Gate Country Club, both of which would meet your green setting and city location requests.

Good luck!
Kelly

5 Favorites: Rooftop Wedding Venues in Vegas

5 Best Wedding Venues with a View Las Vegas | Little Vegas Wedding

Today’s venue spotlight falls on my five favorite rooftop wedding venues in Las Vegas. On Strip or off Strip, the city is full of amazing viewpoints with romantic sparkly lights and a birds eye view of one of the busiest streets in America. Great views from stunning heights, here are five of my favorite venues for gettin’ high at your wedding in Las Vegas.

Foundation Room and House of Blues Las Vegas | Las Vegas Wedding

House of Blues Foundation Room, Mandalay Bay

This venue perched 43 floors up at the top of Mandalay Bay has an incredible view north up the Strip from one of the most southern hotels upon it. With intimate indoor venues an option, the one I like best is the Mandalay Patio with an open air view that will bring gasps to your wedding guests. (And those scared of heights to their knees, possibly.) Simply stunning.

Eastside Cannery One Six Lounge | Little Vegas Wedding Venue Guide

One Six Sky Lounge at Eastside Cannery

An off Strip casino and hotel, the jewel in its crown is the 16th floor ballroom/nightclub called One Six Sky Lounge perfect for private events. More than 300 guests can catch sweeping views of north Las Vegas and the Strip from the floor to ceiling windows and enjoy the modern lounge-like atmosphere accessed via private elevator.

VooDoo Lounge at Rio

Another off Strip view vantage point, VooDoo Lounge at Rio Hotel and Suites offer the usual range of hotel ballrooms and amenities the VooDoo lounge, 51 stories up really shines. Your wedding ceremony can be set against a panoramic view from an open air bar looking at The Strip, but must place between 10am and 2pm, with a 75 guest maximum. Receptions are a possibility, but again, must take place during the day, as the bar is so popular at night.

Tahiti Village | Little Vegas Wedding Venue Guide

Skyview 510 at Tahiti Village

One of the more economical choices for a wedding in Vegas, Tahiti Village is a timeshare just south of the Strip. It offers a beautiful view of the nearby airport as well as the neon and lights of the Strip in the distance. Skyview 510 is a traditional ballroom with two attached patios for up to 100 guests is on the 10th floor, so it is high…but not too high!

Venus Garden Caesars Palace | Little Vegas Wedding Venue Guide

Venus Gardens at Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace has a few options for garden weddings, but Venus Gardens catches my eye because of the perfect combination of classic Roman architecture and privacy. It’s a little bit themed, but in a classy way.

Beautiful additions like a domed temple, stone bench seating, tiled aisle (say that three times fast!) and a koi pond add special little details and make this garden a true gem. If you catch it at the right time of year, the garden is exploding with flowers. This is one of the larger garden options, seating up to 114 people, and Caesars also permits outside photographers.

Frame House at Springs Preserve

With more than 180 acres featuring an amazing array of walking paths and nature trails, Frame House at Springs Preserve is just one of my favorite venues for a wedding. In fact, I’m not sure where to start: there are more than 10 garden/outdoor venue choices at the Springs for weddings! Although I was married at the Gardens Arboretum, these days I’m more partial to Frame House.

This intimate covered space is nestled amongst some of the prettiest floral displays in the garden, and very near to cactus alley. It’s quiet, private and can be very green — yet is protected from the midday sun. Just lovely for wedding ceremonies of up to 45 guests.

Garden Romance at Venetian

Although the canals and faux Venice-style facades of the shopping mall get all the attention, there are some truly lovely European terraced gardens around the pools at Venetian. For smaller elopements and weddings, the Garden Romance package offers a standing room only ceremony for 10 guests set in a side garden of the Venezia Courtyard. This romantic spot has you surrounded by hedges and lush greenery as well as Italian-style sculptures. Of course, the one downside is that like many other Strip hotels, they will not allow you to use an outside photographer.

Emerald at Queensridge

Another off Strip choice, Emerald at Queensridge is an all-in-one banquet facility that just so happens to have an elegant garden for wedding ceremonies. Get ready on-site in the luxurious facilities before you walk the aisle under huge trees, then head inside to celebrate in the chic (and high-tech!) ballroom setting. The courtyard is beautiful not only for ceremonies but for photos, too, and looks beautiful day or night.

Chihuly Gallery at Aria Las Vegas

Dale Chihuly is the artist responsible for that amazing glass sculpture inside Bellagio (and in a few other Strip hotels). He also has an ultra-modern gallery space at Aria featuring his incredible work in a contemporary setting. The gallery is well-suited for ceremonies as well as long-table style receptions for around 50 guests.

The Boneyard at The Neon Museum

We can’t talk about museums without mentioning an incredible part of Las Vegas history: The Neon Museum! This outdoors walk-through museum is home to hundreds of neon signs from throughout Las Vegas history, providing an industrial-chic setting with a vintage backdrop for your vows. It’s popular for wedding photos, but getting married here (especially at night with the signs turned on) would be perfect for any Vegas, architecture or design fans.

Discovery Children’s Museum

I think museums angled to kids are a fabulous space to get married in. They’re unique, playful and memorable! Las Vegas has the wonderful DISCOVERY Children’s Museum which features several different exhibit halls and stage venues perfect for a one-of-a-kind wedding. Who says getting married has to be an grownup affair, anyways?

Origen Rotunda at Springs Preserve

Set on 180-acres just a few miles off The Strip, Springs Preserve is a museum featuring desert botanical gardens, family events, traveling exhibits, trails and — you guessed it — weddings. There is an amazing array of outdoor spaces and gardens, but the Origen Museum Rotunda is the most gallery-style space. It features a high vaulted ceiling, and a room ringed with kinetic granite sculptures floating on water and sculptured cattails, all etched with the names of museum donors.

Mob Museum Vegas Wedding

The Mob Museum

Not only is The Mob Museum (National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement) a symbol representing a colorful part of Las Vegas history, it’s a fun place to get married! The architecturally important building (a former US Postal Office and federal courthouse) is a gorgeous reminder of the early days of Vegas and offers some unique venue spaces within, like an accurate replica courtroom.
