One of my favourite Vegas events (that I have yet to attend) is the annual Wedding and Portrait Photographers International conference. Known as WPPI, this event hosts thousands of photographers in Las Vegas every spring. Many photographers attend learning sessions, pay to access models and styled shoot set ups to try new thing and add to their portfolio and network. Naturally a time of renewal, this spring conference is great for amazingly imaginative styled shoots and inspiration, too, much of which I get to share with you, dear readers!
We’ll kick things off with a simple elopement-style shoot that showcases the natural simplicity of desert scenery and a couple’s intimacy. Rustic detailing, a vintage wedding dress and handmade accessories turn it into a gorgeous concept, perfect for low key couples. Can’t you just imagine these two whipping around the desert in a dune buggy in their wedding gear? Of course, you know I had to include it because of that darn cute dog, too!
This feature is one of a few organized during WPPI 2015 that I have coming in the future weeks. Prepare to get inspired by new ideas, new vendors, concepts and venues!

If you are on the fence about marrying in the desert near Las Vegas at any of the spectacular natural venues available (ie., Red Rock Canyon, Grand Canyon and so on) today’s wedding will push you over the edge, solidly into the “We have to do that NOW” camp.
A few months back, Cactus and Lace Weddings approached me to help promote a contest they were running for a couple get married at a styled wedding at the Valley of Fire. Dozens of you entered, but ultimately Canadians Dawn and Scott won the package. The pair flew down with their daughter and other loved ones for their intimate November elopement and cake and champagne reception surrounded by a gorgeous desert setting.
From the palette drawn from Mother Nature to the succulent-adorned floral designs and the vintage wood furniture paired with touches of lace, your heart will be racing and you will be feeling the lovvvve in this little family. Longing for your own stylish wedding set in the heart of an amazing natural area? Read more about desert weddings here or check out the packages Cactus and Lace Weddings now offer. A stylish desert elopement … with none of the stress.
WHY LAS VEGAS?
Scott and I met five years ago. He is in sales and I am a firefighter in Toronto. We have a small daughter together. We both have a love for Las Vegas and try to go at least once or twice a year. During our first trip there together, we rented a car and drove out to the Grand Canyon, but in the back of my mind I thought to myself “How cool would it be to get married/elope out here in the desert?”
When I saw the contest listed on Little Vegas Wedding, I just had to enter it but I never thought a girl from Canada would win. I was so surprised and shocked when I heard from the girls at Cactus & Lace that I had actually won!
THE CEREMONY + RECEPTION
I can’t say enough about how amazing the entire experience was. I had a Skype conversation and many emails back and forth with Cactus & Lace but never in my wildest dreams would have ever imagined the experience would be as perfect as it was. When we pulled up to the ceremony site my eyes welled up. Everything was absolutely perfect.
The girls at Cactus & Lace listened to everything I said and as a result totally nailed my vision and my taste. The ceremony was just as we both wanted it to be: personal, non-denominational and quick :)
The photos are breathtaking and I have three new friends who helped to create one of THE most memorable days of my life.

Mount Charleston is, in a word: magical. The mountainous setting and lodge-like atmosphere are a world away from the Strip of Las Vegas…but not a long drive away. Brenda and Johnny held their casual rustic wedding on the mountain, opting for the surroundings of nature and trees instead of lights and busy Strip bustle. Personalized DIY projects and vintage touches created by the bride rounded out this warm, woodsy wedding.
WHY MOUNT CHARLESTON?
Since we love the outdoors and knew we did not want to get married on the Strip, Mount Charleston was the perfect location because it was far away enough from the Strip but close enough for our family and friends to make the trip. We also both loved the fact that the ceremony took place with the mountains as our backdrop. I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else.
THE CEREMONY — Patio at Mount Charleston Lodge
They set up and aisle and arranged the chairs. We had a view of the mountains and the cabins to the left. The ceremony was short and sweet, and had an intimate feeling.
THE RECEPTION — Restaurant at Mount Charleston Lodge
The venue included the ceremony space, the reception area, and a three-course dinner (which was delicious.) There were about six long tables set up for the guest and extra tables for the cake and gifts. The dance floor and DJ/karaoke were on the left side of the restaurant and the photobooth was set up on the right. I really enjoyed the reception because guests were able to hang out on the patio outside and dance inside. Overall it was a fun day which was exactly what we wanted.
DIY DETAILS + DECOR
I pretty much made all the decorations and centerpieces myself! My sister and I made all the signs and seating charts out of old picture frames. I spray painted them with chalk board paint, and she hand wrote everything. I bought mason jars and my husband and I made the flower arrangements inside, they were placed on top of vintage books I found at different thrift stores. I made the table numbers from the pages of the books. Our sweetheart table had a monogramed wooden slice, which my husband and I painted and put together. Our personalized button favors were made by a friend and our invitations were hand made by Mariah who I found on Pinterest.
So many things went on that day that I will never forget, from the moment we both started crying when we saw each other for the first time, to the cutting of our beautiful cake.
However, my favorite memory would have to be the day after the wedding. We woke up very early in the cabin and had a chance to reflect on everything that had just happened. We took our time looking at pictures, reading cards and had a chance to take it all in. It was beautiful waking up in the mountains like that.

Pick a good photographer! Take your time planning, enjoy all the little things, be in the moment of the day and enjoy your celebration.
GUESTCOUNT + BUDGET
The guest count of the wedding was about 54 people, honestly I’m not 100% sure what our budget was, it couldn’t have been more than $8,000-$10,000 and that’s including every little thing.

Eldorado Canyon/Nelson Ghost Town is one of my favorite spots to see wedding photos at, be it an intimate elopement, or a fancy styled shoot like today’s post. It’s that mix of rustic desert landscape, stunning skies and cool buildings, I guess.
Full of soft feather accents, pretty pops of color and just the right amount of vintage accessories and decor, this styled shoot from Archel Rolwing Events photographed by Creatrix Photography is gorgeous. So many of you find Little Vegas Wedding because you are searching for the perfect setup for a wedding at a private estate or mansion. Well today is going to set the bar pretty high for backyard weddings. Geela and Kiel’s glamorous wedding took place in a tent, if you can believe it. DIY and professionally supplied decor made the magic happen. Amazing rustic tablescapes and elegant detailing elevated this wedding from lovely backyard affair to full-on luxurious Vegas wedding for them and 80 guests.
WHY LAS VEGAS?
We were so indecisive at first about where we would have our wedding. Kiel has such a small, tight-knit family while I had a huge amount of relatives scattered all over the place from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Kiel wanted a small destination wedding and at first I was totally on board. Who wouldn’t want to get married on the beach in Hawaii during sunset?! I liked the idea of having something more intimate, BUT being an only child, the thought that my parents would love to have a big wedding for me stuck in the back of my mind. So, we sat down and talked about other options.
I’ve ALWAYS wanted an outdoor wedding with a tent reception. So, we looked at venues where we were able to put up a tent and still keep it small and intimate. Our hopes were shut down because every place almost had a certain way of how we needed to do things. So one night we went out to dinner with Kiel’s parents and told them about everything going on. The first thing they said was, “Why not just do it in our backyard?” I was surprised because their home never crossed my mind. The more we talked about it, the more I knew it was the perfect setting.
THE DETAILS ON GEELA AND KIEL’S CEREMONY AND RECEPTION
I wanted to go with a romantic rustic theme. Being that the wedding was in the midst of summer and we were outdoors, I wanted to keep the colors cooler. We chose to do a blush pink rustic theme with an eggplant accent. We had an arch outside covered in flowers right under their huge oak tree where the ceremony took place. The reception was AMAZING! The flowers were perfect. They were so romantic. I only spoke with Dani, the florist, over the phone once about the flowers and she hit the nail right on the head! I told her what my vision and theme were and she made it into such a fairytale. I chose to go with the darker wood for the tables and chairs so that it would help the blush pinks pop and it was beautiful. From the table settings, to the glass dispensers, everything was just so simple and romantic.
Since the home was owned by Kiel’s parents it was SO much easier to plan the wedding and having his parents own a party rental company didn’t hurt either! They were such a HUGE help. It was as easy as telling them the idea I had in my head, and then walking into the tent to something that completely blew my mind. They were amazing in every single way possible.
FAVORITE WEDDING MEMORY
My favorite memory, as cliché as it sounds, was when Kiel first looked at me walking down the aisle. As soon as our eyes met, it was waterworks! There was actually one thing that happened that stood out to me because I thought it was so funny! I was waiting in the room for them to tell me it was ok to come out and walk down the aisle. Maybe five minutes before, Kiel’s mom comes in to tell me the DJ wasn’t there, but they had the situation under control. So, I took it as it was and since it was “under control” I didn’t let it stress me out. As I’m walking down the aisle, I see the DJ in his makeshift booth and I hear the music playing. It was only after everyone was seated and eating that they told me the DJ thought the wedding was the next day! He arrived 5 minutes before the ceremony started and had the catering crew helping him set up the sound system! Needless to say, everything was smooth sailing from there and everyone had a great night!
(Editor’s Note: If you want to see some behind the scenes set up, you need to head over to RSVP’s Facebook page. The VIP restrooms were incredible. It’s not often I steer you to look at toilets, but these are pretty amazing! —Kelly)
