Lovely Desert Wedding in Calico Basin | Taylored Photo Memories

Calico Basin | Little Vegas Wedding

Calico Basin was just the right mix of adventure and intimacy for Michelle and Grant. These Canadians blended rustic with romance and a dash of relaxation for their Red Rock Canyon vows. I love the matching bouquets the flower girls and Michelle had.

After the wedding, the couple and their 30 guests literally got the party rolling by loading into the Land Yacht, a huge party bus perfect for this sort of occasion. The couple did some kitschy cool photos at the Neon Museum Boneyard and then headed out for more fun, including a family-style dinner at El Segundo Sol and late night drinks at The Peppermill’s retro Fireside lounge.

Romantic New Years Eve Elopement in the Desert | Taylored Photo Memories

Red Rock Canyon Engagement | Little Vegas Wedding
Anita and Brian travelled all the way from New Zealand to tie the knot in Las Vegas. Well, the desert anyhow.

They chose a New Years Eve elopement which seems so impossibly romantic. Anita’s gown has just the right level of glitz and glam to match the date and venue, bringing in a chic feel. This is such a personal, private capture of their vow exchange that I feel like I’m spying!

Easy, Breezy Red Rock Elopement | Taylored Photo Memories

Red Rock Elopement | Little Vegas Wedding
I get so many emails from couples who are hoping for a just-for-two elopement, asking for my advice on where to hold it. For couples who love nature, Red Rock Canyon is often at the top of my recommendations. It’s private, incredibly scenic and convenient, as it is super close to Las Vegas.

Sam and Sage opted for a ceremony set in the wilds west of the Strip at Red Rock after their plans for a larger wedding in their home state got to be overwhelming. These two wanted to keep things natural, and a spring ceremony was perfect with cooler weather. A few flowers even made an appearance. They didn’t need much: a photographer, officiant, their vows and a simple banner to use in an announcement card keep things beautifully easy.

WHY RED ROCK CANYON?

Coming from Hawaii, we are surrounded by lush green mountains, waterfalls, and ocean everyday. The beauty of nature is so much of what we love about living in Hawaii so although we decided to escape the islands and elope in Vegas, it was important for us to still be surrounded by nature. Red Rock Canyon was so completely different than the landscape we are used to and the big open feel of a desert seemed like the perfect place for us to exchange our vows.

THE CEREMONY

Our original vision of our wedding day consisted of a large party at a beach house on the north shore of Oahu, but as we began to plan the event we became overwhelmed by the details and the amount of work and money it would take to create the perfect day. I woke up one morning and asked Sam if he wanted to elope. No fuss, no drama, no stress. Once we made the decision to elope there was a huge feeling of relief.

Our vision then became about what was really important to us; expressing our love for each other in an intimate ceremony surrounded by beauty. We wanted our day to be about US and we were determined to make that happen. It was perfect. Thanks to McKenzi Taylor our planning process was simple. I had seen pictures of Red Rock and knew that’s where we wanted to tie the knot, but I left it up to McKenzi to choose a time and exact location for our elopement. She suggested an officiant and we were done!

FAVORITE MEMORY

The one thing Sam and I did spend time on was writing our own vows to each other and I’d have to say that was the best part of the planning process. It was a way for each of us to reflect on our relationship and really focus on what this commitment meant to us. It was a beautiful process.

ELOPEMENT TIPS FROM SAM AND SAGE

Keep it simple! It’s so easy to get sucked into “you need this and you need that” for you wedding, but none of those things are actually what’s important. Your special day should be about you and your partner and sharing your love for one another. You don’t need $25,000 and fancy napkins to experience that. No matter what you decide, just be true to what YOU want and not what someone else tells you you need.

Delightful Desert Elopement from City Wedding Tours

Calico Basin | Little Vegas Wedding

Lately I’ve been hearing some rumblings that perhaps Calico Basin and Red Rock Canyon aren’t as accessible to weddings as they once were, due to some recent changes to the permit system.

However, there is no denying the place is gorgeous. Incredible rock formations, beautiful colors and a special intimacy that can only come from getting married in the natural beauty of the desert. Kelsey and Adam chose to marry (after getting engaged) there before joining friends and family at a festive reception after. Sounds perfect for this down-to-earth couple who also chose to support artisans where ever they could in their wedding day.

THE CEREMONY — Calico Basin at Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon is our favorite spot in Las Vegas. We wanted an outdoor wedding and Red Rock is such a beautiful location it was the obvious choice. It was the location Adam proposed to me as well, so it holds a lot of memories for us. We also wanted the reception festivities to stay within the Summerlin area, so Red Rock made an easy venue to get between the different locations for the wedding festivities.

DIY DETAILS + DECOR

(We were going for) simple, natural, and as DIY as possible. We wanted to keep it small and intimate with a personal touch. We wanted our actual wedding ceremony private to keep it as intimate as possible, but we opened up our reception to close friends and family. We kept it simple by holding the reception party at Adam’s parent’s house. We had an open bar so people could make their own drinks as they pleased, and the majority of the food was homemade. All decorations were either handmade or purchased through Etsy to support independent artists. We had a succulent/desert theme which we incorporated through our colors (greens and purples with highlights of gold and silver) and flowers (succulent centerpieces and succulent bouquet and boutonniere). We made our own wedding invitations, centerpieces and signs.

FAVORITE MEMORY

My favorite part of the planning process was just being able to enjoy the reward of all of our hard work at the great reception party we had. While we kept our wedding simple there was still a lot of planning involved. It was nice to be able to enjoy all of the work everyone had put in to make our day so special. Another part I enjoyed was being able to support independent artists. Etsy was a great resource and I feel like a lot of our wedding items were truly unique and original.

LAS VEGAS WEDDING TIPS FROM

Make a lot of lists! The only thing that kept me organized was making lists. It felt satisfying being able to mark stuff off as we went along. At the end of everything there was only one or two things that I had forgotten, but they were minor and not really significant. If I had not used lists to keep myself organized a lot more would have been forgotten! Another good thing to remember is that everything will still be okay even if something is missed or goes wrong. There’s always something that’s going to go wrong but it’s such a big day and you are surrounded by such loving and supportive people that no one would really care if you forgot to put out a certain favor or sign, etc. No one knows the difference and they’re most likely having a good time anyway!

Scenic Elopement at Red Rock Canyon from Taylored Photo Memories

Red Rock Canyon Elopement | Little Vegas Wedding

In my time writing about Vegas weddings, I’ve occasionally heard about families who are not that supportive of the couple’s decision to host an untraditional or destination wedding. But today’s couple, Jessica and Jason? Jessica’s mother was fully on board with a Vegas elopement. To her, the proof was in the pudding: she herself had eloped and was married for 48 years!

Jessica and Jason’s Red Rock Canyon elopement was a mix of fun and romantic. The gorgeous venue at Calico Basin was down-to-earth, and in fact is a spot the couple has enjoyed hiking in the past. And driving out there in a sportscar kept it fun and exciting and a little bit Vegas-y.

The couple paid tribute to Jessica’s parents’ marriage by replicating a photo taken at their 1966 elopement just ahead of going out to protest President Johnson’s arrival in their town. Their wedding photo is of the two of them holding a “Make Love Not War” sign and their special flower has always been a yellow rose, a flower incorporated into Jessica and Jason’s floral details.
