Elegant Wedding in a Ghost Town {Eldorado Canyon}

jamiey photography, nelson ghost town

I have yet to visit Eldorado Canyon (aka Nelson Ghost Town) but I love it so much, I try to feature weddings and engagements shot there as much as I can. It’d be so awesome to have one day a week just dedicated to Nelson posts, actually… haha! Maybe some day. I think the thing that appeals to me is that the town never looks the same. Rusted out buses, crashed planes, old barns, fields of desert cacti – it’s so unique, and is super flexible.

Jamie Y Photography shot Laura and Wade’s destination wedding at Eldorado Canyon not too long ago, and the photos turned out so beautifully. Laura and Wade came from Missouri specifically to tie the knot at the scenic abandoned mining town, and they transported the 50 of their guests out to the little ghost town in a bus!

Angie Kelly of Peachy Keen Unions wed the couple, surrounded by the cacti and rustic architecture of the town – yet, a very modern touch as they both read their personal vows straight off an iPhone. The wedding colors – canary yellow, navy blue and turquoise look so great against the desert tones and the busy backgrounds at Nelson, don’t they? After the wedding Jamie took a few more photos of the couple as the guests nibbled on snacks and had beverages. Loving the ruffles of Laura’s gown in her bridal portraits!

Popping the Question at a Ghost Town {Eldorado Canyon}

josh & jen photography desert proposal

This couple, Tony and Eliza, met with Josh & Jen Photography out at the always enchanting Eldorado Canyon for a few photos from a “regular couples portrait session.” As is the case recently for Josh & Jen, one half of the couple had other plans in mind, and Tony totally surprised Eliza with a ring and a marriage proposal mid-shoot. I love the sequence of photos as Eliza realizes what is going on! I have a lot of respect for these kinds of proposals – I totally would not be able to keep the secret!

Tony and Eliza met online, but were not originally both living in the Vegas area when they initially got to know one another. After a few meetings (including a first one that turned a short detour on a cross country road trip into two days together) Tony moved to Las Vegas. “We’re both certain that we fell in love on our first date. There wasn’t any doubt in our minds that we wanted to be together and that we’d do anything to make that happen.” wrote Eliza. Awwww!

Giddy Up! Nevada Ranch Wedding Inspiration {Styled Shoot}

ranch-wedding-nevada032

cowboy wedding las vegas

Well hello there, pardner. Why don’t you kick off those boots, grab some sweet tea and pull up a stump to join us for today’s styled wedding shoot by Taylored Photo Memories?

This stylized wedding shoot is a lotta country & western, a little bit desert inspired but totally full of love … and horses! The photos and idea may be just a concept, but the couple featured, Anna and Steve, really are ranchers and they really are married! It’s so wonderful to see so much authenticity in a styled shoot – from the wedding couple on real horses in the photos as well as an actual officiant (Angie Kelly) and a real meal (by All About Catering Las Vegas)!

The model couple’s love story is classic romance – they were introduced through Anna’s mother, who met Steve while at a training program at his ranch in New Mexico. Anna fell for her cowboy and Steve lasso’d himself a cowgirl –  they’ve been inseparable ever since. In fact, their real life horseback wedding inspired many ideas in this shoot!

McKenzi writes about her idea for the stylized wedding concept: “This Southwest themed styled shoot was something I had been wanting to do for a long time, but finding well trained horses and models that could ride them was always my biggest challenge. I finally had a styled shoot dream come true went I met the real-life cowboy and cowgirl couple — Anna & Steve Housley. They were such a joy to work with!”

Every vendor working on this creative concept (see full list, below) photographed at the old Eldorado Canyon mining town brought their own ideas to this magazine worthy spread. There are so many details to love, from the touches of rough burlap softened by Anna’s lace gown, the beautiful worked in cowboy boots, spiky succulents and desert flowers in the bouquets and arrangements, western typefaces, turquoise and coral colors, that totally delicious looking BBQ feast, a blanket ceremony and of course the horses!

What a great inspiration for an outdoor wedding! If you’re looking for more western-style weddings near Vegas, check these LVW posts out: Rustic Legends Ranch Wedding, Vegas Style or Gettin’ Hitched at McKee Ranch

Surprise Desert Proposal {Eldorado Canyon/Nelson Ghost Town}

Kim and Katherine set up an appointment with Josh & Jen Photography, just to get a few photos of them as a couple. Josh & Jen arranged to meet the couple out at Eldorado Canyon, aka “Nelson Ghost Town”, outside of Las Vegas. This little spot has all sorts of amazing photo opportunities, as you have probably seen featured on the blog before, and you will see below! It has a bit of everything – rustic architecture, desert landscape and foliage, rusted out trucks and vehicles…even a “crashed” plane!

When Kim and Katherine arrived, Kim quickly pulled Josh and Jen aside and let them in on a secret. He said he was about to propose to Katherine, and to be ready. And they were…

Engagement Session with Classic Cars and Clouds {nelson ghost town}

nelson ghost town elopement wedding photography

I love the atmosphere and props in today’s engagement session by Taylored Photo Memories from the ghost town at Nelson (aka Eldorado Canyon) an abandoned mining town just outside of Las Vegas. The clouds on the mountains and the faded washed out colors and quirky props like classic trucks, gas pumps and bicycles make for beautiful backdrops.

McKenzi photographed Shameka and Kenyatta, a local couple, at Eldorado Canyon after taking them there for the first time. She writes:

“As a photographer you could spend hours upon hours here, no matter the time of day. this particular shoot was on one of the few rainy days in Las Veags, so it provided a different and almost surreal feel to many of the photos. There was a foggy mist banking up in the canyon that surrounded this little venue.”

I totally agree! I look forward to seeing the photos from Shameka and Kenyatta’s wedding happening in April!
